There is no other memoir that is comparable to the Glass Castle but Educated by Tara Westover. It’s one of the most inspiring yet truly unbelievable story of struggle, determination, and success. A lot fell in love with Tara Westover‘s sharing of her life story. From having lived a difficult childhood raised by a survivalist family to how she managed to get to college and eventually a PhD in Cambridge.
This Tara Westover book is considered to be a candidate as the best memoir for 2018. Although it has received a lot of high ratings from different major book review websites, still others gave a poor rating for Educated a memoir by Tara Westover. They said that the story is just “too good to be true” or “just fantastical and unbelievable”. Perhaps it may be because how the Westover kids were raised by survivalist parents who are preparing and waiting for the doomsday to come. The facts provided in this Tara Westover book is sometimes contradicting how survivalists way of living. They seem to be living in convenience having a phone, boom box, car, a junk yard, and even sent off to a local library, and even had many occasions to mingle with the other kids in town.
Also pointed out is that the family often meet accidents in almost everything they do from minor punctures, major burns, or even explosions. All those injuries were treated without the comfort of the modern aid. Her father does not believe in the government system nor the hospital. Her mom is both a midwife and a herbalist – quite contradicting to the belief of the family. Tara’s brothers are equally weird and maybe because they are raised by a mentally unsound parent. Despite living in a destitute condition, one may ask how one earth did the family able to pay for the car repair and even send the kids to school.
But despite of those questionable facts provided in Educated book by Tara Westover, it still embodies how one can overcome all adversities and conquer the desires of the heart if you put brilliance and determination to work as one. This is truly an inspiring read especially to the young who are aspiring things to do or achieve in their lives. Educated Book Reviews
What worked for me in this book was Tara’s drive for a better life. How with very little support from her family, she went out on her own and obtained an education. I appreciated her drive and determination. Her book is well written and I realize this is her account of how she remembers things from her perspective. I just was left with questions hence the 3 star rating.
Again, in the minority with this one. Most love this book. It just wasn’t for me.
I received a copy of this book from Random House Publishing group and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was enthralled and moved by this powerful memoir. The author grew up in a survivalist family in Idaho, the youngest child. She was not homeschooled—instead, she simply didn’t go to school at all, due to her father’s mistrust of public schools. Her family didn’t believe in modern medicine. Instead, her mother was an herbalist and midwife. Her father owned a junkyard. Her childhood is affected over and over by serious injuries of family members, injuries which are not treated.
As Tara gets into her preteen and teen years, one older brother in particular starts tormenting her, and the tormenting rises to the level of hugely severe abuse. In part in response to this, she decides to go to college, and by pretty much sheer force of will, does well enough on the ACT to get into Brigham Young University. From there, she starts a storied college career and eventually gets a doctorate from Cambridge. However, each time she is drawn back to the her family, her brother’s abuse continues, and the family denial turns more and more severe. The memoir becomes a story of her internal struggle—to believe her own version of her life and to have the strength to break away from her past.

This book doesn’t sugarcoat things. It’s not an education makes everything better kind of story. Tara continues throughout the book to struggle to find her way, to stand up for her beliefs. Hell, to find her own beliefs.
This is an amazing book. It makes you realize how easy your life is. And how strong folks like Tara are to be able to rise above their beginnings and be able to fight back against the attempts of family to hold them down.
I’m willing to bet this book makes it onto a lot of best of 2018 lists. It will certainly be on mine. Highly recommend!
